December is one of the busiest months to visit Vietnam, and for good reason: the south is dry and sunny, the north is cool enough for long walks, and the holiday season gives the cities a festive feel. The catch is that Vietnam is long – more than 1,600 km from top to bottom – and the weather in Hanoi has almost nothing in common with the weather on Phu Quoc.

Here's what December really looks like in each region, and how to plan a trip that gets the best of it.

Is December a Good Time to Visit Vietnam?

Yes, as long as you choose your regions with the weather in mind. The far south and the coast around Mui Ne are at their best, the north is cool and mostly dry, and the central coast is the one area to approach with a flexible plan, because the tail end of its rainy season can still bring heavy downpours.

Northern Vietnam: Cool, Dry and Often Grey

Hanoi in December is jacket weather. Days are mild and pleasant for wandering the Old Quarter, but evenings get chilly and the sky is often overcast. It's a month for street food, hot coffee and long walks rather than sunbathing.

  • Ha Long Bay: cruises run as normal, but expect mist and cool air on deck. Beautiful in a moody way – just not swimming weather.

  • Ninh Binh: the rice is harvested, but the limestone karsts and river boat trips are still lovely, and there are fewer crowds than in spring.

  • Sapa and Ha Giang: properly cold, especially at night, with occasional frost up high. Pack warm layers and check that your homestay has heating.

Central Vietnam: Lovely Towns, Unpredictable Skies

Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An are still finishing their rainy season in December. Some years the month is mostly dry; in others there are several days of heavy rain, and the sea can be too rough for swimming. Hoi An's lanterns and tailors and Hue's citadel are worth it in any weather, but keep beach days flexible and don't build a tight schedule around boat trips.

Nha Trang is in a similar position – the coast around it often stays wet into December, so it isn't the strongest pick for a pure beach holiday this month.

Southern Vietnam: The Safest Bet for Sunshine

From Ho Chi Minh City southwards, December marks the start of the dry season. Humidity drops, rain becomes rare and blue skies are the norm.

  • Ho Chi Minh City: warm and dry, with Christmas lights along Nguyen Hue and around the cathedral. Traffic builds up sharply before Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.

  • Mekong Delta: green, warm and easy to visit as a day trip or an overnight from Saigon.

  • Phu Quoc: the island's best season begins – calm seas on the west coast, long sunsets and easy beach days.

  • Mui Ne: dry and windy, perfect for kitesurfing and sunrise on the sand dunes.

  • Da Lat: cool, dry and sunny up in the highlands, with flowers blooming all over the city.

What to Pack for Vietnam in December

  • A warm jacket and layers for the north – more of them for Sapa or Ha Giang.

  • A light rain jacket for central Vietnam.

  • Sunscreen, a hat and summer clothes for the south and the islands.

  • Comfortable walking shoes – the best of Hanoi and Hoi An is seen on foot.

Christmas and New Year: Book Ahead

The last two weeks of December are peak season for international visitors and Vietnamese travellers alike. Flights to Phu Quoc and Da Nang, beach resorts and Ha Long cruises fill up early and prices rise, so lock in flights, hotels and airport transfers as soon as your dates are fixed.

Spending the holidays in Saigon? Traffic around District 1 on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve is intense – this guide to getting around Ho Chi Minh City over Christmas and New Year has practical tips on timing and transport.

A Simple Two-Week December Route

  • Days 1–3: Hanoi, with a day trip to Ninh Binh.

  • Days 4–5: an overnight cruise on Ha Long Bay.

  • Days 6–8: Hoi An, keeping plans flexible in case of rain.

  • Days 9–10: Ho Chi Minh City and a day in the Mekong Delta.

  • Days 11–14: Phu Quoc for sunshine and beach time.

The Bottom Line

December is a great month for Vietnam if you follow the sun south, enjoy the cool north for what it is, and keep central Vietnam flexible. Plan the holiday weeks early and you'll get the best of a beautiful time of year.
